Couple who lost Sh18,000 mysteriously found cash returned to their home

Manchester: A couple, distraught after more than £100 was stolen from a purse, were amazed when someone popped a surprise present through the letterbox.

While shopping, Claire Hilton lost her purse, which contained all her credit cards and personal documents - as well as £135 she had been saving for husband Michael’s birthday present.

She had intended to buy him a gold chain to replace one which he had been given as a 21st birthday present, reports Manchester Evening News.

After losing her purse Claire, 36, posted a message on Facebook in case anyone had found it.

A few days later, £135 was posted through her door with a note from a former colleague.

Someone had also returned the purse, though it was empty.

Mr Hilton said: “My wife left her purse in Uppermill when she went to the butchers to buy sausages.

“She’d put it on Facebook and obviously it got noticed by someone.

“When I got home someone had brought the purse back home and posted it through the postbox.

“Someone had stolen the money inside it but left the purse.”

He added: “I also had a package. When I opened this it had a note from an old colleague saying - I wanted to do a random act of kindness.”

It turned out the note and money had been sent by Marilyn Cole, who used to work with Michael at clothing store JD Williams and had heard about the missing cash.

Michael said: “I was speechless as to how kind this was. She won’t accept the money back or let me take her out for dinner.”

International Random Acts of Kindness Week is taking place from Monday February 9 until Sunday February 15.
