Mike Sonko announces Sh300k reward for information on Meru bodaboda gang linked to sexual assault video

Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has launched a forceful public campaign against gender-based violence following a disturbing incident in Meru, where a woman was reportedly raped by a bodaboda gang.

In a strongly worded online statement accompanied by a video, Sonko announced a Sh300,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects, vowing they would not "hide or breathe another day freely."

"What happened to this woman is pure evil," he said.

"A gang of cowards violated her and tried to silence her with threats. I will not allow these beasts to hide or breathe another day freely."

Sonko said his private rescue and security team had already been deployed to Meru to locate the survivor and arrange her evacuation to Nairobi for urgent medical care and protection. He insisted the pursuit would be relentless.

"Let it be known: we are coming for them," he declared.

"They will face justice, and there will be no peace, no escape, and no mercy under the law. Violence against women MUST END NOW."

Tagging the DCI Kenya and FIDA Kenya in the post, he urged investigative agencies and women's rights groups to join efforts to secure justice.

Sonko's heightened involvement in GBV advocacy traces back to a personal family tragedy.

He has previously revealed that his daughter survived domestic abuse, an experience that pushed him into more visible activism.

After facilitating her treatment at Nairobi Women's Hospital, he expanded his support to survivors through financial aid, medical care and legal assistance.

The Meru case, he said, has further strengthened his resolve, adding that he will follow the matter "to the end."
