Late Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso to be buried in Kisumu

The late Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso will be buried in Kisumu County, her husband Edwin Abonyo has said.

According to Laboso’s husband, the former French lecturer will be laid to rest at their Fort Ternan home in Koru at a date to be announced later.

The late Dr. Joyce Laboso succumbed to cancer at the Nairobi Hospital on Monday afternoon.

Governor Laboso was under medication two weeks after arriving from London where she had been hospitalised.

On July 14, 2019, Bomet Deputy Governor Hillary Barchok urged the residents to stay calm and pray for her recovery.

The Governor’s ailment had remained undisclosed. Dr Barchok had urged the nation to respect her privacy.

On May 29, Governor Laboso left the country for Britain for treatment. She was admitted at the Royal Madden NHS Hospital where she underwent treatment for nearly a month.

She was then transferred to India for further treatment three weeks ago.

While in Britain, NASA leader Raila Odinga, Ambassador Manoah Espisu, Chief Justice David Maraga and Kericho Governor Paul Chepkwonyvisited her. Former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto also paid her a visit.

Leaders mourn Laboso

President Uhuru Kenyatta termed Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso's death as a blow to the country's leadership.

"I have received the sad news of the passing away of Laboso with utter disbelief," he said in a statement.

Deputy President William Ruto praised Laboso for her hardworking nature and iconic style of leadership.

“Dr. Joyce Laboso exemplified the strength of a woman: gentle yet firm, intense, hardworking, resilient and pragmatic. She was an iconic leader, who focused and delivered on her constituents' interests,” read a statement by DP Ruto.

Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga eulogised Laboso as a visionary leader. She was the deputy chairperson of the Lake Region Economic Bloc who had close interests of her people at heart, he said.

"From her earlier days as a legislator, Dr Laboso's vibrant and aggressive nature propelled her against all odds to be among the first female governors."
