Governors have set up a 10-member committee to ease the political tensions in the country.

The members are Josphat Nanok (Turkana, also the convener), Cornell Rasanga (Siaya), Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni), Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega), and Joyce Laboso (Bomet).

Others are Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu), Charity Ngilu (Kitui), Francis Kimemia (Nyandarua), Kiraitu Murungi (Meru), and Salim Mvurya (Kwale).

Under the aegis of the Council of Governors (CoG), the team of 10 will spearhead the agenda dubbed 'National Reconciliation, Dialogue, and Healing'.

CoG Chairman Nanok said the governors were aware of the heightened political atmosphere and the team would work to bring all the parties to the table.

Polarised agendas

“We must all seek dialogue and resist perpetuating polarised agendas,” he said.

The names were unveiled during a special meeting where governors also discussed health and funding from the World Bank.

The World Bank has committed to support 45 counties, giving Sh270 billion for urban infrastructure development.

The governors opposed plans by the Ministry of Health to handle cancer treatment and management in the country.

Instead, they called for more funding for equipment and training of specialists at the county level and the disbursement of cash for cancer drugs as a conditional grant.
