TALK OF THE DAY: Uhuru's decision to skip debate was unwise and could cost him

The decision by President Uhuru Kenyatta to snub the presidential debate on Monday was a big mistake. Many Kenyans were eager to listen to his response to all the accusations made against him and his government and what he plans to do different if re-elected. The popularity of NASA candidate Raila Odinga as well as the three other candidates who attended has no doubt increased. Uhuru has all the reasons to get worried because many Kenyans may just change their minds about voting for him. The President gave his main challenger 90 minutes to campaign for himself and also poke holes in his development record, which he had guarded so hard throughout the campaigns. Joseph Macharia, Maasai Mara University. [email protected]

What President Kenyatta's advisers were trying to do when they told him not to attend the debate was to ensure he is not put in an awkward position, having to respond to the many issues that are affecting the country. This includes corruption, underperforming economy, rigging claims, and the many failed promises. But whether or not Raila Odinga will win over more voters after the debate will be seen on August 8. But I also believe most voters had already decided on who they will vote for. Diana Njoroge. [email protected]
