Nacada wants tougher rules on alcohol adverts

The National Authority for the Campaign Against Drug and Alcohol Abuse (Nacada) is now seeking a law that will ban alcohol adverts on national television before 10pm.

The authority also wants new laws enacted where alcohol packaging, just like cigarette packets, will carry pictures depicting the effects of excessive drinking.

Nacada Chairman John Mututho said there was need to regulate the adverts to ensure children did not watch them when they were home.

"We are meeting with stakeholders according to the law over the new regulations on advertisements of alcohol products," he said.

Mr Mututho said the Alcohol Control Act had four components in it, noting that dealing with promotions and advertisements was one of them.

"The four areas we are looking at are licensing regime, treatment and rehabilitation, quality and now advertisements," he said.

The former Naivasha MP said the ban would also include films and film materials that show actors smoking or drinking, including the use of celebrities to advertise alcohol.

Mututho said they expected the regulations to be signed by Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaiserry in three weeks.

He was speaking to the Press at a consultative meeting for alcohol industry stakeholders on the proposed regulations at Morendat Training Centre in Naivasha.
