Former PS Ludeki Chweya appointed Kenya School of Government boss

Nairobi, Kenya: Former Home Affairs Permanent Secretary Ludeki Chweya has landed himself a new job as Director General of Kenya School of Government (KSG).

Dr Chweya, reported Wednesday at the Kabete-based KSG, which was formerly known as Kenya Institute of Administration. He takes over from Elijah Wachira who has been in the acting capacity for almost two years. Prof Margret Kobia, who now chairs the Public Service Commission, last held the position.

The former PS served under the grand coalition government having been plucked from the University of Nairobi’s Political Science and Public Administration department in 2008.

Chweya was competitively recruited through interviews conducted by Deloitte and Touche in conjuction with the council of KSG three months ago.

Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru signed Dr Chweya’s appointment letter. He is credited with the transformation of the prisons department through implementation of far-reaching reforms, upgrading of prison facilities and provision of new uniforms for both inmates and warders during his tenure as Home Affairs PS.   

The ex-PS, who was on a sabbatical for five years, resumed lecturing at the University of Nairobi department of political science, when President Uhuru failed to retain him last year.

The don is expected to steer the KSG in achieving its key role of providing learning, consultancy and research services designed to inform public policy, promote national development and standards of competence and integrity in the public service.

Dr Chweya will also provide leadership to KSG in its contribution to the transformation of the public service, which will be expected to function effectively, innovatively in a results-oriented and accountable manner.

A Bachelor of Arts graduate of University of Nairobi (UoN), Dr. Chweya has an MA from the same university and Ph.D from Queen’s University at Kingston, Ontario, Canada in comparative politics of development and international relations.
