President Uhuru, Raila eulogize late Ochwada

Busia, Kenya: President Uhuru Kenyatta joined other leaders in paying glowing tributes to former assistant minister Arthur Ochwada who was buried at his Nakhasiko home in Samia district at the weekend.

In a message of condolence read on his behalf by Busia senator Amos Wako, President Uhuru described the late Ochwada as a selfless and dedicated servant who served the country with distinction both as a trade unionist and minister.

Uhuru said the vibrancy of the modern trade unions in the country stems from the contribution of the late Ochwada, who along the late Tom Mboya were the founders of trade unions in the country."He will be remembered as a great son of this country who fearlessly fought for the rights and welfare of workers,"said Uhuru.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga said the late Ochwada was an activist who risked his life for the good of others and played a vital role in the liberation struggle.

"The freedom enjoyed in the country and across Africa, as well as parts of South America is thanks to their efforts," said Raila.

He said the deceased was a man full of wisdom who counsel to a number of politicians including Raila himself. Cotu secretary general Francis Atwoli said the visionary leadership of Ochwada helped trade unionists to work closely with Pan Africanists in the struggle for independence in Africa.

Former Vice President Moody Awori who was also a nephew to the deceased described his late uncle as a humble servant who made a mark as one of the best assistant ministers for environment.

LPK national chairperson Prof Julia Ojiambo who succeeded Ochwada as MP for Busia central constituency in the 70s urged the local political leadership to set a date to plant trees in commemoration of the departed minister.
