KCPE candidate drowns in Indian Ocean tragedy

A Standard Eight candidate has drowned in the Indian Ocean during a swim trip.

Abdallah Omar Chilla, 18, was a pupil at Musurwa Primary school. He died on Tuesday during a visit to Tradewide beach in Diani after he was swept into deep waters by strong waves.

Msambweni police boss Nehemiah Bitok told The Standard that Omar was in the company of friends when the tragic incident occurred.

“A group of lifesavers swam and retrieved the body some hours later,” he said.

Mr Bitok asked parents and teachers to closely monitor their children’s movements during the holiday season.

Meanwhile, police officers have closed a popular club in Diani following an incident on Saturday in which a lone assailant stabbed and killed a reveller in a dawn attack before fleeing.

The dead man was identified as 30-year-old Salim Tambwe.

Bitok said it was not clear how the attacker gained access to Masai Club, adding that they were investigating if he could have been hiding among the other revellers.

“The manager of the club reported to us that a man had been stabbed. The unknown attacker has neither been identified nor arrested. We have closed the club until further notice as we continue with our investigations,” said Bitok.
