A school watchman who raped a 17-year-old girl in Likoni was yesterday sentenced to 15 years in jail.
A probation officer had recommended a custodial sentence or incarceration.
The magistrate ordered a probation report and a mental examination of the suspect after he pleaded guilty to the defilement charges.
Mjera Nyota Matanda had admitted to raping the girl at Consolata Primary School in Likoni, Mombasa County, on February 27 and pleaded with the court to pardon him.
“Your honour I pray that you forgive me. I will not repeat that mistake,” said Mr Matanda when he pleaded to the charge.

Despite his plea for mercy, Senior Principal Magistrate Ongeri Nyakweba sentenced him after he concluded that the accused had been on a one-year probation and was likely to repeat the same offence if he was let to serve a communal sentence.
“The probation report says that you are unfit to serve a non-custodial sentence,” he ruled.
