China Road on the spot over environment care

MOMBASA: The firm building the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) has denied allegations that it is destroying the environment and underpaying its workers.

In a statement issued Monday, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) said the allegations were "unfounded, uncalled for and only serve to malign the company's name".

CRBC said it did not engage in sand harvesting and got its construction materials from suppliers in the particular regions where construction work was being carried out.

"CRBC does not and will not engage any supplier whose activities are detrimental to the environment. We have in the past terminated partnerships with such firms," read the statement.
