Nyeri County increase revenue collection by 20 per cent

The county government increased its revenue collection by 20 per cent in the first half of the 2018/19 financial year.

According to the executive for Finance and Economic Planning, Robert Thuo, the county collected Sh331 million in the period under review, compared to Sh274 million it collected in the first half of the 2017/18 financial year.

Mr Thuo said the implementation of a new revenue collection system was responsible for the increased collection.

“It is a mobile-based application called Nyeri Pay. It shows how each revenue collection point is performing at any given time,” said Thuo.

He added that the system had sealed loopholes through which revenue was lost. It had also helped deal with delays in showing how each revenue stream was performing.

“Nyeri Pay allows close monitoring and efficient reporting, unlike before when the revenue department had to manually monitor each sub-county or revenue stream.”

The county is popularising the mobile payment option through M-Pesa paybill No 191900.

“Next week we shall launch the citizen app, which will allow residents to pay for any service, from the comfort of their homes without having to come to the office or look for an attendant,” Thuo said.

According to the official, the new system supports multiple payment channels, which means residents can use mobile money, bank deposits, cheques, ATM cards and smart cards to pay for county services. The Nyeri Pay revenue collection system was rolled out in October 2018.

“The system will allow citizens to log in and register, then make payments for their land rates or parking fees from their mobile phones or computers. They will receive a message confirming their payment,” Thuo explained.

Enforcement officers have access to the system and, therefore, can identify those who have paid and those who have not.

“Nyeri Pay is paperless for the most part and there will be no room for corruption as the transactions will be made directly into the county government accounts from your bank, sacco or mobile phone,” Thuo said.
