Too little, too late efforts to clear David Mwiraria over Anglo-leasing scandal

Top political leaders, including President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga, have asked that former cabinet minister David Mwiraria’s name be cleared so that he is delinked from the Anglo Leasing scandal.

Speaking at Mwiraria’s funeral service at Ntakira Methodist Church in Meru town yesterday, the leaders said it was a shame that one of Kenya’s best Finance Minister had gone down with a financial scandal hanging on his neck.

Mwiraria is among former government officials charged over the Anglo Leasing scandal last year although his health status forced him not to attended court sessions after he took his plea at his hospital bed. The leaders said investigative agencies must move with speed and clear the name of the former minister so that he can rest in peace. Mwiraria faced four counts of economic crimes and conspiracy to defraud the State.

“It is really a pity that he has gone to sleep before being cleared over Anglo Leasing dragon. We urge investigative agencies to move with speed and clear his name for posterity,” said Raila.

But Uhuru, who spoke after Raila, immediately called for retraction of some of the claims that the Opposition had previously made against the former minister.

Humble man

“I take note of what have been said about clearing Mwiraria’s name because I know it really affected him. But if some of us had not made the claims they had previously made against the deceased, may be he would not have been implicated and prosecuted,” said President Kenyatta.

Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi said Mwiraria had died a humble man and had not stolen a cent from the government.
