Contractors working on various National Government projects in the country who are behind the stipulated timeline will lose them to their counterparts who can meet deadline.
Speaking in Marimanti in Tharaka constituency, Deputy President Dr William Ruto said that contractors working on various government projects across the country must complete them within the agreed period failure to which the contracts will be terminated.
Dr Ruto said government had started several projects including tarmacking of several roads in Tharaka-Nithi County to facilitate improvement of local’s livelihood but blamed contractors for delay.
He noted that due to laxity, the contract for Gatunga-Marimanti-Chiakariga road whose work started back in 2016 had been canceled and assigned a Chinese contractor after the one who had won the tender failed to meet the expectations.
The road joins Tharaka North, Tharaka South and Igambang’ombe sub counties and is key in facilitating accessibility of the county headquarters Kathwana.
The DP noted that more contractors are set to lose jobs including the one working on Keeria-Magutuni-Kathwana and Chogoria-Weru roads in Maara constituency due to their slowness.
“Government has already terminated contracts after the assigned contractors failed to adhere to the agreed timeline and many others are set for cancelation,” said Dr. Ruto.
The DP said the expectation of the government is to better lives of its people in line with the promises that the Jubilee Party gave them during campaign.
He said in line with the President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four Agenda, government was set to construct Kithino dam in Tharaka that will solve over 60 percent of water in the entire county.
He said the dam will facilitate irrigation of thousands of hectares of land especially in Tharaka hence bringing to an end, the era of starvation in the region.
He added that procurement for Sh1 billion Chogoria and Chuka towns water and sewage system projects had been completed and work would start any time.
Ruto noted that though government has a long term projects to end starvation in the region, national and county governments will work together to ensure that no person dies due to lack of food. He said the two levels of government
will provide relief food to those seriously affected? As part of the Big Four Agenda initiative, more than 1000 houses will be constructed in Kathwana, Chuka and Chogoria towns in the county creating job for over 5000 youths. He asked youths to join technical training institutes so that they could acquire skills required.
The deputy Head of State, said government had allocated Sh300 million in the 2019/2020 budget for expansion of Tharaka University College and Sh10 million for construction of Tharaka Ura Gate Cultural site.
