The national government has been urged to plan ahead to prevent post-harvest maize losses.

Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang’ula said priority must be given to maize growers as the Government goes into the budget season.

Mr Wetang'ula, who was speaking in Lugari yesterday, said the Government must set aside sufficient resources to buy farmers' produce at acceptable prices commensurate with production expenses.

Farmers are expected to harvest between August and October.

He warned that farmers should not be left to the mercy of cartels and traders who often paid as little as Sh800 for a 90kg bag of maize.

Wetang'ula also waded into the debate on implementation of a new education curriculum, saying there was need for all stakeholders to dialogue and reach a consensus.
