Kwale County signs roads deal with Chinese contractors

Shelter Solutions Managing Director Saleh Mung’ang’a and Wengfu Chairman Liu Changue.

Kwale County has signed a Sh10 billion public-private partnership deal with two Chinese companies to develop infrastructure.

The contract with Wengfu Engineering and Contracting Company and Shelter Solutions is the first phase of the Shimoni Integrated Development Project.

The project will develop county roads to bitumen standard to boost the area’s economy.

“This phase is set to build the most modern roads in Africa to serve the county,” said Shelter Solutions Managing Director Saleh Mung’ang’a.

The roads will be dual carriageways with an integrated corridor bearing support systems such as data connectivity hardware, electric cabling, and water and gas pipes. The roads will also use solar power street lights.

Construction is scheduled to start in the next 30 days and will use the modern polymer technology that builds a kilometre in only three days.

The signing of the deal was witnessed by officials from various government agencies including the President’s Delivery Unit and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Lunga Lunga MP-elect Khatib Mwashetani also attended.

“The technology used will also produce thousands of cubic metres of desalinated Indian Ocean water daily to be used for irrigated agriculture and domestic use in the entire county,” said Mr Mung’ang’a.
