Foreign firms eye rich harvest in agriculture sector

More than 60 agricultural firms from various countries around the world will pitch tent in the country next week to scout for business and investment opportunities.

The companies are interested in exploring business openings in the agriculture sector as well as showcasing their latest technologies in the sector. 

The investors will attend a three-day Agritec-Africa International Exhibition and Conference between June 23 and 25 in Nairobi. 

Principal Secretary of Agriculture Sicily Kariuki said the forum to be attended by delegates from over 14 countries will enhance the country’s efforts to attract more investments.

“Leading institutions in innovations in the agriculture sector from over a dozen countries will showcase the latest technologies in the market both in terms of equipment and services,” she said. Ms Kariuki made the remarks in a speech read on her behalf by acting Agriculture Secretary Anne Onyango at a Nairobi hotel Wednesday.

The visitors include farmers, agents and distributors, farm contractors, bankers, educationists and students and representative of various governments. Also expected are importers, exporters, trade industry and trade media, investors and entrepreneurs, scientists, consultants and transport and logistics experts. 

Some of the companies to exhibit their technologies are from India like Goldin (India) Equipment Pvt. Ltd and Jet Fibre Pumps & Equipment experts of irrigation technology.

Others from that country are Madho Agro Industry (Akhtiar Agro King) that leads in agricultural machinery and Vaisakha Irrigation experts in irrigation technology.

Information initiative

Kariuki said during the event Kenya will have an opportunity to showcase its homegrown information initiative dubbed E-extension, whose goal is enhancing the capacity of the extension agents in service delivery.

She described the innovation as a simple technology on which farmers can access information using phones especially today where more than 90 per cent of them own phones.

Radeecal Communications who are the organisers of the event have said Kenyan farmers will benefit from modern technologies to be exhibited during the event.

Chief Executive Sanyal Desai said the interest of the Indian companies is to partner with Kenyan Government in addition to growers with a view to boosting productivity. 

“We want to enhance technology transfer in the agriculture sector and thus benefit more farmers,” said Desai.
