Independence freedom fighters have told the Government to leave the interpretation of the new Constitution to legal experts.

The Mau Mau War Veteran Association said on Sunday conflicting interpretations only served to confuse Kenyans.

The organisation Secretary-General Gitu Kahengeri said the on-going scramble for leadership positions under the new laws bode ill for the future and what Kenyans had yearned for.

The group asked the Attorney General Amos Wako not to abdicate his mandate to politicians but instead interpret the Constitution to the letter.

He expressed fears that if its implementation and interpretation was left in the hands of a few people and not constitutional experts, those who voted for it in the last referendum will feel cheated by the political class.

He said majority of those who want seats in the devolved Government were self-seekers who had no interest of the country at heart and asked Kenyans to be wary of them.

Gitu said politicians who have been tainted by corruption should be barred from seeking public offices and claimed the ideals of freedom fighters had been ignored.

Narok branch Secretary Karaya Ngare said the new Constitution should be implemented according to the set time lines.

They spoke as a group of Narok lawyers led by Mr Charles Sena, their spokesperson, called for the scrapping of the Provincial Administration.

The lawyers said the presence of the administration would make the work of governors difficult, saying the counties should work in tandem with the national Government.
