Kenya’s existence as a united, cohesive and stable country has never come under such serious threat as now. The country has been stuck in the quagmire of a protracted presidential contest twice disputed and once boycotted by the Opposition.

The chickens seem to have come home to roost over the culture of political patronage in the appointments and employment of public officers.

Elections have come and gone leaving in their wake sweet victories and bitter defeats. President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto have been endorsed for the second term as NASA flag bearer Raila Odinga and his brigade nurse their wounds. Election observers across the board have unanimously endorsed the exercise hailing it as "free, fair and credible.

As the country heads to the final stretch of the 2017 General Election, the issue of campaign funding for independent candidates should be put on the political agenda, discussed and conclusively addressed.

Statements coming from both sides of the increasingly hostile political divide are firm, categorical but strikingly conflicting.

The President knows just too well that this crisis has the potential to polarise the country further and set it down the treacherous path of self-destruction come 2017 if it is not resolved sooner rather than later.

The state cannot blind itself to the reality of religious abuse in this country.
