Smallholder farmers with innovative ideas to manage agricultural risks are the stars of a new video challenge.
The challenge, launched on September 26 by the Platform for Agricultural Risk Management (PARM) and Africa 21, invites journalists and media professionals to showcase the resilience and creativity of rural farmers who produce one-third of the world’s food.
This initiative is part of the celebration of World Food Day and the International Day of Rural Women.
It features the stories of farmers who have overcome multiple challenges and improved their productivity and sustainability with their own solutions.
Each compelling documentary-style video should demonstrate how the farmers’ initiatives have positively impacted their community and beyond.
Special attention is paid to women, youth, and other vulnerable groups who often bear the brunt of agricultural risks such as climate change, pests, diseases, market fluctuations, and conflicts.
The winner will get a chance to visit one or more countries where a United Nations agency operates and learn from their projects on agricultural risk management.
The first three winning videos will also be presented at an international event along with the winning journalists.
A professional jury composed of communication specialists from the United Nations, experienced journalists from various media outlets, and a member of a farmers’ organisation will review the videos based on criteria such as relevance, originality, quality, and storytelling.
Details of participation and technical guidelines were provided during a webinar held on October 5.
Applicants have until November 18, 2023, to apply.
Through this challenge, the organisers aim to shine a spotlight on rural farmers who contribute to strengthening their own and the agricultural sector’s resilience to agricultural risks through their innovative actions.
