A police officer has described the gory state of murdered girlfriend of Migori Governor Okoth Obado when her body was discovered in a forest.

Inspector Mary Mogire told the court that Ms Sharon Otieno’s naked body had stab wounds on the neck and abdomen, and was lying in a pool of blood.

The officer also testified that they recovered two used condoms, three packets of unused condoms and a sachet of an alcoholic drink next to the body allegedly used by her killers on the night of September 3, 2018 at Kodera Forest in Oyugis town within Homa Bay County.

“We found her naked body lying facing down. Her personal items were thrown all over. There were indications of people sliding around the area she was lying,” said Ms Mogire.

Although the officer said they recovered the used and unused condoms next to Sharon’s body, she did not say whether she was raped by her killers.

Asked whether there was semen in the used condoms, Ms Mogire stated that she was sure the condoms were used but could not tell what was inside since she wasn’t the one who did the analysis.

Ms Mogire was testifying in a case where Obado, his personal assistant Michael Oyamo and former Migori County clerk Caspal Obiero are facing trial for the murder of Sharon and her unborn baby on September 3, 2018 at Rachuonyo sub-county within Homa Bay County.

She told trial judge Lady Justice Cecilia Githua that on September 4, 2018 she was summoned by her boss at Oyugis Police Station to follow up a report by one Moses Onditi who had reported about a dead person in the forest.

According to Ms Mogire, the herdsman had reported that he was grazing his cows at Owade in Oyugis and as he was returning home, he came across the body in a thicket.

“He told us he was so shocked and couldn’t tell whether it was a man’s or woman’s body and took us to the scene where a casual look at the hairstyle assured me it was a woman’s body,” said Ms Mogire.

She testified that at first she thought it was a case of suicide but when she moved closer, she discovered a pool of blood around the neck, which made her believe it was murder.

She stated that she immediately informed the regional director of criminal investigations and since the officer was away, she was instructed to secure the scene and transfer the body to Rachuonyo Sub-county Hospital mortuary.

“We cordoned off the area and turned the body. We discovered more stab wounds. She was lying in a white tracksuit soaked in blood,” said Mogire.

She added that Sharon’s bra was removed and placed near her shoulder while her inner wear was placed on her right leg.

Ms Mogire’s statement was confirmed by another police officer, Sammy Mediki, who accompanied her to the scene.

Mr Mediki stated that after seeing the used condoms, he presumed that they were used on Sharon by her alleged killers since they were rolled.

After securing the scene, he took photographs with his phone which he later shared with homicide detectives. The hearing continues today.
