Why Moi's body was transported on a gun carriage

During the burial of former President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, Kenyans who missed the burial of his predecessor, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta must have been puzzled by the wheeling of his body on a gun carriage.

Many wondered aloud why.

A gun carriage is used by the armed forces to tow heavy weapons from one place to another.

Moi’s body was carried on one to signify the highest honour given to a fallen general. Moi was, after-all, the Commander-in-Chief of the defence forces for 24 years.

This type of funeral where the remains of a former Head of State is carried on a gun carriage was borrowed from the British.

On the carriage there were two flags:one is the miniature national flag and the other a miniature presidential standard.

The gun carriage funeral in not new in Kenya. In August 1978 the first president of Kenya, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta was given a State send-off on a gun carriage.
