A Makuen woman who thought she was pregnant with triplets birthed quadruplets at Makindu sub-county hospital today morning.

Hilda Mumo had a C-section Monday at Makindu sub-county hospital in Makueni, and while the doctor was delivering the babies, he felt a fourth baby.

Mumo, a resident of Kiou village in Kasikeu, Kilome sub-county said she was overjoyed after giving birth to three girls and one baby boy.

"When I was three months pregnant, I went for ultra-sound and I was informed I was carrying triplets. I was happy to wait for the triplets only to get the fourth baby," said Mumo.

Mumo said she had developed a headache and she went to Sultan-Hamud hospital to seek medication but when she arrived at the facility, she developed strong cramping in her abdomen.

"I only went to the hospital when I had a headache but on arrival, labour pains developed. The hospital had to refer me to Makindu since they said they couldn't handle the situation," she added.

At Makindu it didn't take long, "When I arrived at Makindu I was taken in for C-section. Three of the babies were removed, but I could feel another one remaining which was also removed," she said.

She said that although the family was gifted four times the joy when she gave birth to the quadruplets, she feared that in her current state, they are unable to raise such a big number.

"I request for assistance, it's hard to feed such a number of kids," said Mumo.

According to medics in the facility, the male baby which was born second weighs 2 kgs, while two of the three female ones' weigh 2 kgs each and the last one weighs 1.3 kgs.

The babies were born before the expected 9 months period.

She said she will not add any other child and she had enough of her family.

Hilda's husband Urbanus Musembi Kimeu said they were prepared for three babies.

"The stomach was growing in a fast way. A test showed of three kids now they are four. I am asking for assistance from even the county government," said Kimeu

He thanked his wife for such a "hard" work disclosing that it was a hectic process. He too said they had enough of children since this was the second birth.

Dr. Makau Isaack Godon said after receiving the patient they prepared the mother under an emergency caesarian sectioning.

"We did a successful operation and babies extracted. We took the babies to the newborn unit. We are monitoring and both the babies and the mother are in stable condition, "said Dr Makau.
