KCSE candidate abandons exams after giving birth

A candidate in Nyamira refused to take examinations in hospital after giving birth on day one of the National tests.

The girl aged 19 wrote to the Kenya National Examinations Council, declining to continue with the exams.

According to Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba who is overseeing the exams in the region, the candidate went on labour on November 3 and was admitted to Bosiango Health Centre where she delivered successfully.

"She did not sit for any paper and she has already written to KNEC saying she doesn't need to sit her KCSE," Mariba said.

The Commissioner said the girl had been regularly absent from school since February after registering for the exams and that she only reappeared during the tests.

In a similar case, another candidate at Nyaikuro Secondary School wrote the papers at a nearby private clinic where she was admitted with labour pains.

The girl is still at the facility where she sitting the exams.
