Gang kills man and wife, steals TV set in Embu

A couple in Kandakame village of Kithimu sub-location, Embu County was clobbered to death by robbers who raided their home on Monday night.

The deceased identified as Joseph Gitonga, 37, and his wife Caroline Kaari, 30, were business people in the neighbourhood.

Area chief Albert Njiru said that four assailants entered the victims’ home at around 10 pm but only found Caroline.

They demanded money before beating up the wife.

The gang remained inside the house until Gitonga arrived an hour later when they opened the door for him then clobbered him too.

Embu County Police Commander Daniel Rukunga said the woman was hit on the head using crude weapons and fell unconscious.

“We learnt that when they entered the house they asked for money and when the wife said she had none they bludgeoned her on the head and she lost consciousness. When the man arrived they also beat him up, seriously injuring him.

Rukunga said the assailants stole a TV set, a DVD player and a cooking gas cylinder.

According to the police commander, the couple’s two children aged 10 and five years who were unhurt went to their uncle’s house and informed him.

The uncle rushed the couple to a nearby hospital where the woman was pronounced dead on arrival while the husband died hours later while undergoing treatment.

The commander said that police have launched investigations and are confident of making arresting the couple’s killers.

The bodies are being preserved at the Embu Level Five Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary and an autopsy will be done.
