The university student shot inside State House grounds has apologised to President Uhuru Kenyatta over his Facebook remarks in which he hurled insults at the President and threatened to attack the State House.

Brian Kibet Bera, a fifth-year student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, while appearing before Magistrate Francis Andayi also tendered his apology to Kenyans and promised to change.

Bera was arraigned in court Wednesday morning but did take plea because a mental assessment by Mathari Hospital had revealed he is schizophrenic.

His father David Bera had also told The Standard in an earlier interview, that the final-year mechanical engineering student has been in and out of hospital after he started exhibiting subtle signs of mental illness.

During the court appearance on Wednesday, his family pleaded with the court to allow the suspect undergo further treatment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.

Magistrate Andayi directed that the suspect remains in police custody at the Kilimani Police Station until Thursday when the case will be heard.

Bera’s trouble begun on June 10 after he jumped over the fence and brandished a knife when he was asked to surrender.

He had outlined his intentions to storm the State House the previous day (Sunday, June 9) on his Facebook page.

“Tomorrow I attack State House,” read part of his posts. He also indicated that he was fighting for what he termed as ‘land injustice’ in his home area in Trans-Nzoia County.
