Woman 'gave birth at party then threw baby in bin so she could keep drinking'

A mum who gave birth during a party dumped her newborn baby in a bin so she could carry on drinking, according to reports in Russia.

The infant was found alive after a passer-by heard his cries thinking it was an animal in distress, and was stunned to find the child.

His mum, named Yulia, gave birth in the toilet at her flat in the western city of Ryazan.

Yulia, 31, has been arrested, and her other two children - aged three and four - have been taken away from her, according to Russian news site KEM .

After giving birth she put the baby in a bag and placed the bag in a large bin, it is claimed - before carrying on partying.

She reportedly did not tell anyone that she had given birth.

A witness told RIA : "Approaching the bin, I heard heart-rending screams.

"At first I thought that a kitten was screaming, but when I unwrapped the plastic bag, I gasped.

"In the container among the mountains of garbage lay a living baby."

The freezing child was rushed to intensive care, having suffered suspected organ failure.

His mother has been charged with attempted murder of a newborn baby.

Investigator Anzhelika Yevdokimova said: "The mother said that she did not want this baby.

"She did not even check if it was a boy or a girl before throwing it away. During the arrest, she was heavily intoxicated with alcohol."

Yulia, who works as a cleaner, said the umbilical cord fell off on its own and did not have to be cut.

The region's children's rights commissioner, Ekaterina Mukhina, said doctors had "literally saved" the infant, and paid tribute to medics.
