It’s a tie: Two top 2018 KCPE candidate score 453 marks

Two candidates have emerged top in this year’s KCPE scoring 453 marks out of 500.

According to Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed, 12,273 candidates scored 400 marks and above, an improvement from last year’s 9, 846 candidates.

Girls performed better than boys in English, Kiswahili and sign language while the boys did better in Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Religious Education.

Over 50 per cent of 2018 KCPE candidates managed to score 200 marks and above.

While announcing the results at Star of the Sea Primary School in Mombasa, CS Amina said 1,052, 364 sat exams this year, compared to last year’s 993, 718.  

Of those, 527, 294 were boys and 525, 070 were girls.

Special needs candidates performed better than last year with the top candidate scoring 446 marks.

The CS said 228,414 candidates managed to score 301-400 marks, higher than that of 2017.

Candidates will be able to receive their results by sending their index numbers to 20076.

Amina also said that Form One selection for secondary school placement will begin on Monday and that there will be no second selection.

Four candidates were found guilty of impersonation and their results cancelled.

Twenty three out of 47 counties registered more female candidates among them; Kakamega, Nairobi, Meru, Bungoma, Vihiga, Siaya , Kitui, Embu, Makueni, Machakos, Nakuru, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Kisii, Nyamira, Tharaka-Nithi, Kericho, Uasin-Gishu, Kirinyaga , Trans-Nzoia, Nandi, Mombasa and Bomet.

However, the CS raised concern over how students spend their holidays saying “We are extremely worried by the number of students visiting social clubs during the holiday season. We challenge parents to take charge over their children.”
