Court order for mental assessment of man charged with killing wife

The High Court has ordered that a man charged with the murder of his wife be taken for mental assessment. High Court Judge Joel Ngugi yesterday ruled that Nicholas Chirchir, 37, must take the test before taking plea.

“I order for the investigative officer to take the accused person for mental assessment within two hours after this issuance of orders,” ruled Mr Ngugi.

The ruling was made after prosecution applied for the plea to be deferred, again. He said the accused had been in custody for long and his plea delayed. Chirchir is alleged to have killed his wife Anyesi Cherono, 36, in Lulukwet, Njoro sub-county, on October 6, by stabbing her in the chest.
