Police disperse NASA MPs, supporters outside Supreme Court in Sunday afternoon drama

A group of MPs and their supporters led by John Mbadi, Simba Arati, Gladys Wanga, Opiyo Wandayi and Narok Senator Ledama Olekina were Sunday barred by police from accessing the Supreme Court precincts.

The politicians made good their threats and had walked towards the Supreme Court before armed police officers stopped and pushed them back to near Intercontinental Hotel in the Sunday afternoon drama.

Police told them to put off a public address system they had. The officers told the leaders to pray near the precincts with their PA system off because it was noisy and disrupting business there.

The MPs protested police move and pronouncements saying it was their right to pray whenever they wanted.

They told their supporters not to fear and instead come out for prayers and vigil there when asked to.

Police had said they would not allow anyone to assemble outside Supreme Court and deployed heavily.

The presidential petition proceedings are taking place at the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court is expected to give a ruling on interlocutory applications at 7pm today (Sunday).

The Court was supposed to give a ruling at 2pm but postponed it to 7pm.

Supreme Court Registrar Esther Nyaiyaki, however, did not state the reasons as to why the changes were effected. She noted that more information will be divulged in the course of the day.

“Good afternoon, rulings will be delivered at 7pm today and not 2pm. Hearing will commence at 9am tomorrow morning. Notices to follow shortly,” Nyaiyaki indicated.

The hearing of the case is scheduled to begin tomorrow (Monday) at 9am.

NASA leader Raila Odinga’s legal team demanded on Saturday night to be given access to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) servers.

The lawyers claimed that forged documents were used to rig the elections in favour of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
