IEBC commissioner Roselyne Akombe back in the country after week travel to the US

Electoral agency commissioner Roselyne Akombe

Electoral agency commissioner Roselyne Akombe is back in the country, a week after her travel to New York that caused controversy.

Dr.Akombe returned to the country on Monday night, as it had been scheduled, even as speculation was rife that she couldn't come.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official was stopped at the JKIA on Tuesday 15th and was forced to spend the night at the airport over what officials then informed her was lack of clearance to travel.

However, following the intervention of the US embassy in Nairobi, and State House, the commissioner was cleared to travel the next day, on Wednesday.

Following the incident, there have been fears that Dr. Akombe will not return to Kenya for fear of her security and due to the embarrassment.

On Tuesday, having arrived the previous night, she joined commission staff at the Bomas of Kenya where she oversaw preparations of documents that were later filed at the Supreme Court.

The commissioner even joined the staff and lawyers who were led by CEO Ezra Chiloba to deliver the documents at the Supreme Court buildings, but choose to stay in the car. According to those close to her, she deliberately chose to stay away from cameras since she doesn't want to be the point of focus.

"Commissioner Akombe has been in the news for several days now and she thinks it’s not good anymore for the public's attention to be diverted to her instead of the commission," a senior staff of the commission said.

When reached for comment, IEBC communications manager Andrew Limo confirmed that Dr. Akombe was back in the office.

"Commissioner Roselyne came back on Monday night and joined us on Tuesday; she was with us in Bomas," Limo added. IEBC later tweeted a picture of Akombe with the staff at Bomas.
