A policeman told the inquest probing the death of Olympic champion Samuel Kamau Wanjiru that a woman was found in the marathoner's bedroom.

Police Constable P. Ireri, attached to Nyahururu Police Station, said when he responded to a distress call from the runner's house in Muthaiga estate Nyahururu, he saw the woman standing on the balcony of the bedroom.

The officer said he and his colleagues rushed to Wanjiru's house after the police station commander received a distress call from Triza Njeri, Wanjiru's wife.

Police found a watchman at the gate and six men in the compound who appeared to be marathoners.

The officer said he talked to the woman as soon as Wanjiru was taken to hospital by his colleague and some of the marathoner's colleagues.

"I was left to guard the place where I noticed there was a woman at the balcony and I talked to her. She wanted to jump from the balcony," said Ireri.

Friend of Wanjiru

Ireri told the court that the woman told him her name was Jane Nduta and that she was a friend of Wanjiru.

According to the officer, she retreated into a bedroom and locked herself in. Ireri said when the crime scene officer arrived, he found that Nduta had locked herself in a room and the officers used metal bars from the watchman to get her out before escorting her to the police station.

Ireri police asked the watchman whether Wanjiru was in the company of anyone when he arrived.

The officer told the inquest that the watchman informed them that Wanjiru had arrived in the company of a woman and inquired whether his wife, Trizah Njeri, was home.

Triza was not in the house at that time but arrived later and went upstairs, where an argument ensued.
