Locals in fear after stray elephants invade farms

Elephants from Koibatek forest have invaded farms in Rongai and Sachangwan areas.

Local residents have complained that they have suffered heavy losses because stray elephants and their calves have destroyed their maize crop.

Alfred Tuiwei from Rongai said the elephants were first sighted four weeks ago and that residents were living in fear of being harmed by the animals.

Joseph Cheres said the elephants were currently at Delorane farm. Mary Kurgat said the efforts of Kenya Wildlife Service officers to drive the elephants back to the forest had failed.
