If NASA has its way, CS Mwangi Kiunjuri and four key Cabinet secretaries could face 3-year jail term

Devolution CS Mwangi Kiunjuri risks a three-year jail term, for openly declaring his support for the Jubilee government.

Kiunjuri, speaking during a recent Jubilee rally, claimed he will undauntedly support President Kenyatta’s re-election, as he is the “government that elected him into power”.

The Elections Offences Act 2016, submitted by the IEBC, clearly states that a public officer who “publicly indicates support for or opposition against any party, side or candidate participating in an election,” commits an offence and is liable on conviction, to a fine not exceeding one million shillings or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years, or to both”, the clause proceeds to say.

Kiunjuri however, remains indifferent on the matter.

According to the opposition coalition NASA that raised the alarm on Kiunjuri’s ill behavior, Kiunjuri together with six other public officers including 4 Cabinet Secretaries, should be prosecuted by the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko, in a week’s ultimatum.

“Fred Matiang’i (CS Education), Najib Balala (CS Tourism), Cleopa Mailu (CS Health), Kiunjuri (CS Devolution), Nkaissery (CS Interior), Principal Secretary Joseph Njoroge and Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority John Nguraini, should be charged for going against the law. None of them is above the law, whatsoever or whomever,” said NASA affiliate James Orengo on Thursday June 14.

The seven, Kiunjuri included, have been accused of attending media interviews flaunting the achievements of the Jubilee government, in a bid to seek a re- election of the incumbent.
