Food prices soar as inflation hits double figures

The ravaging drought in the country has condemned food prices to an 11-month high.

This came on the back of inflation hitting double digits for the first time since 2012.

Latest data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics shows food and non-alcoholic beverages’ prices are 18.56 per cent more expensive than they were in March last year.

Overall inflation is at 10.28 per cent, being the second time in a row since 2012 that it has gone above the Government’s target.

This was mainly attributed to increases in prices of several food items including spinach, maize flour, milk, potatoes and maize.
