Former Mwea MP Allan Njeru was laid to rest yesterday following a funeral ceremony held at Wang'uru Stadium.

The ceremony was attended by two other former MPs - Njeru Ndwiga (Manyatta) and Kinyua Mbui (Ndia). Also among the mourners was Kirinyaga Governor Joseph Ndathi and Senator Daniel Karaba.

The controversial Mwea Trust land dominated the speeches by various leaders, with Mr Mbui accusing Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti of meddling in the matter that was yet to be determined in court.

Mr Ndathi said the county government had provided a lawyer for the Mihiriga Kenda Clan, which claims to own the 54,000 acres.

Bishop Njeru served for one term and shocked many when he defected from the Opposition in 1997 to join Kanu.

He expected that the move would compel the national government to issue Mwea rice farmers with titles. He lost to Alfred Nderitu in subsequent elections.
