Kidney patient wants to sell land to cover medical expenses

A 42-year-old man suffering from kidney failure wants to sell his family's prime land in the city to cater for his medical expenses.

Wilson Nganga Kago's condition was diagnosed over a year ago and requires an urgent kidney transplant.

With the blessings of his siblings, he applied to have power of administration on his family land so that he could sell it.

Buyer sought

"I am not making an appeal for funds. All we need is for a buyer to purchase the prime piece of land so that I can get the funds to cater for my medical expenses," he told journalists at the High Court while accompanied by his sister Mary Kago.

The land in Dagoretti, he said, measures 0.32 hectares.

In his request for administration, he attached an affidavit where he indicated that he stands to suffer irreparable loss if the medical attention is not granted.

"I have no funds available apart from the proceeds of my share in the said estate to cater for the medical expenses which is scheduled to be carried out in India at a cost of Sh1,800,000," he said in his affidavit.

An attached medical report indicated that the father of three went to seek treatment at Machakos Level Five Hospital, complaining of swelling of the lower limbs and abdominal aches.

Dr L. Muinde stated that he conducted several tests on the patient and discovered he had renal failure and therefore recommended an urgent right kidney transplant.

The report further indicates that he has been put on an anti-failure regime and dialysis.

Nganga says that his brother Godfrey Kamunyo had already offered to donate his kidney and subsequent tests have shown that he is a match.

Three children

The patient is married with three children with the oldest being 10 years and the youngest is nine months.

He says he has used up to Sh110,000 on treatment.

Nganga said that his plight was to be aired on one of the local television channels but this was not to be after the recent switch-off that lasted 19 days.
