IEBC to decide fate of diaspora voters

IEBC Chairman Isaac Hassan has said that the commission will soon decide whether Kenyans living in the Diaspora will participate in the March 4^th Polls.

Mr Hassan maintained that IEBC is an independent commission and that they would asses on their own if the exercise is possible.

Justice Minister Eugene Wamalwa had said on Tuesday that it would impossible for the commission to register voters in the diaspora and head to the polls in time.

Hassan has however admitted that the BVR 47 kits that had been set aside for registration  of diaspora voters have not been dispatched.

He noted that if the diaspora voters are locked out, it might take the commission to court. He remained empathetic that some of the rights guaranteed in the constitution would be realised progressively adding that Kenyans should be patient.

The IEBC statement comes after voters in the diaspora expressed their displeasure with Wamalwa’s pronouncement on Tuesday, with some instructing their lawyers to file formal complaints with the courts.
