I have been involved in establishing an alumnus for my former High School since last year and the achievements so far has been pleasant. The numerous colleagues who have come in even to offer leadership; moral and material support has made it quite an outstanding model. Indeed, the team who include diverse professionals, Corporate and government leaders as well as businessmen has shown what the power of unity of purpose can achieve. Indeed some great ideas have come out of the forum including rebuilding the academia success of yesteryears when we were students. But this week I was really stunned to learn the school had to be closed down to avoid the virus of destruction going through the nation.
The destruction of schools by student is really disturbing and don’t augur well for Kenya’s future. I have argued in writing and in various fora before, that unless we create mechanism to manage the future of our people better, chances are that this country will easily degenerate into chaos. The overwhelming mess of unemployment, poverty and hopelessness engulfing a significant segment of the population should be really worrying. When secondary school students who are at their peak of maturity start becoming a problem to the society, there is a reason to really get worried.
