On his sharp dressing
I wear expensive shirts that are starched; expensive shoes; cheap suits and Mitumba ties. All my ties are mitumba because you cannot get a good tie in any designer shop in Paris, London or Nairobi. The good ties are used ties.
On turning around NYS
Many things have also been said about me and the National Youth Service. Kiplimo Rugut (former NYS director) was a fi ne gentleman. I have deep respect for him. But he could not handle the grand vision that government had for NYS. To think that he came up with the 5-Point Vision is to overstretch your otherwise limited imagination.
This Vision was crafted by 15 consultants, including retired Generals, top notch Professors, academics, investment bankers, and experts in movement making. The consultants were both local and foreign. As a Professor of Political Economy, I had the privilege of leading this team for 18 months. I led them because this was a vision that attempts to place economic empowerment of the youth in a context of political turmoil.
It was Rugut who gave me the consultancy work at NYS. He is a very nice gentleman, but I can say the NYS vision was too big for him to properly execute. The current director, Nelson Githinji is a good man but let me stop there because I don’t want to ruffle feathers.
