Brew makers in Kisii County risk prosecution

The National Authority for Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) Chairman John Mututho has called on chiefs to apply section 19 of the agency to stop illicit brew menace in the county.

Mr Muthutho said they will soon take all manufacturers to court for causing deaths of over 30,000 Kenyans, who perished after consuming the second generation alcohol.

He said they have strong counter claim evidence to enable them take some manufacturers to court. He cited section 46 of the Constitution on consumer rights, which talks about compensation for loss or injury arising from defects in goods or services.

Mututho was speaking on Tuesday in Kisii town, when he met chiefs and assistant chiefs from Nyaribari Chache sub-county in a sensitisation forum to enable administrators to take control of the menace in their areas.

He said chiefs cannot claim they do not know those who engage in the outlawed practice.

Section 19 of the Nacada Act states that specific officers shall be deemed to be authorised officers for the purposes of this Act.

Area MP Richard Tongi said: "Youths are being misused in this trade. Bright minds are going to waste. We are ready to deal with this menace."

All manufacturers to face prosecution for the over 30,000 deaths related to alcohol, says Muthutho.
