It is slightly over 40 days since Meshack Yebei, Deputy President William Ruto’s alleged ICC defence witness, was laid to rest.
Yebei was reportedly abducted on December 28 last year, only for his body to be discovered at the Tsavo National Park after about three months of searching.
The long search was marred by controversy after a mutilated body believed to be that of Yebei was recovered on January 2 in River Yala, Eldoret.
However, after a DNA test was carried on the body, it turned out to be that of Yusuf Hussein who went missing around the same time.
During his burial at his Turbo home on March 22, relatives blamed senior government officials for the death, as elders warned that a curse would befall Yebei’s killers if they did not confess their sins within 40 days.
According to retired Major John Seii, a senior Kalenjin elder, 40 days were mentioned during Yebei’s burial, but it does not mean that is the exact time the effect of the curse will become manifest.
“I know people might have been counting the days, but it does not work that way. It could take ages for anything to happen. But it must come to pass. It is just a matter of time,” said Seii.
Nickson Yebei, one of the deceased’s brothers, however, told The Nairobian that, “We are yet to hear anything since the burial but in case something turns up, we’ll share the news.”
