Residents of Nairobi City County may have to think twice before eating uncooked food.
This is after Governor Evans Kidero raised a cholera alert in informal settlement areas in Nairobi.
The governor has banned food hawking in the county, warning that those who breach the order will be arrested.
“Nairobians should avoid eating food which is not cooked. Food hawking is also not allowed in the city. This will help contain the spread of cholera,” he said.
Food hawked in the city is usually cheap and preferred by low cadre workers like casual labourers.
Commonly hawked food include githeri, boiled eggs and maize (roasted and boiled).
Kidero said: “We have had few cases of diarrhoea in Mathare and Kibera. However, we have not established how many people were affected.”
Nairobi County health department recently reported the cholera outbreak after almost 30 people from Kibera were admitted to hospital.
