Police officer accused of killing Lamu woman to undergo psychiatric test

Malindi, Kenya: A judge in Malindi has ordered for a psychiatric evaluation on the police officer accused of causing the death of a 22-year-old woman after he allegedly threw his gun in her direction in Mpeketoni, Lamu.

The judge issued the order to establish whether the officer can stand trial for the murder of Margaret Njeri who died at Pandya Memorial Hospital in Mombasa last week, after close to two months in a coma which she lapsed into on January 17 this year.

It is alleged that the officer hit her after missing a boda boda man whom he was aiming at.

The officer, Mohammed Salim, surrendered at Malindi Criminal Investigation Department CID officers on Thursday.

Earlier reports had indicated that he went underground after learning of Njeri’s death, but on Thursday when he presented himself, he claimed he was away seeking medication.

Yesterday, Public Prosecution assistant director Vincent Monda, asked the court for five days to establish the mental state of the suspect.

The court granted his wish.
