A 25-year-old was arraigned in court for allegedly shooting and robbing a businessman in Starehe.
Alex Macharia Kayua was accused of robbing Fred Muniu together with others not in court, while armed with pistols on February 16.
They allegedly stole four silver chains, mobile phones and a wallet containing Sh41,000 property from Muniu.
Police said the deceased was travelling in a matatu from the city centre accompanied by his friends. On the way, the prosecution said, the accused who was posing as a passenger, turned on the other travellers and ordered them to lie down.
Other passengers reportedly managed to escape through the windows, leaving the deceased still lying down.
The prosecution said the accused shot the deceased three times in the chest before robbing him. The gunshots attracted nearby residents who traced the accused to his hideout.
In mitigation, the accused said, “I was not among the thugs. I am just a boda boda operator and my motorbike was set ablaze by people accusing me of the offence.”
Kayua was released on a Sh1 million bond.
The case begins on March 5.
