Drunken police man beaten, injured at a discotheque in Kitui

Kitui, Kenya: A police officer based at Migwani police station in Mwingi West Sub County, Kitui County escaped lynching by irate revelers at a disco dance after the officer became unruly and issued threats.

The drunken officer sustained deep cuts, bruises and swollen limbs after the brawl and was admitted at the Migwani Sub District Hospital where he received several stitches.

The constable was tossed out of a bar at Thokoa market in Migwani district, amid kicks and blows from the frenzied crowd that bayed for his blood.

Local OCPD Julius Muu ordered investigation into the matter where the deputy OCS Inspector Lenges summoned a local businessman and his wife .The couple were quizzed before recording statements.

According to eye witnesses, the police man incensed the revelers when he tried to forcefully drag the businessman's wife to the dancing floor as the woman resisted the advances.

"The officer is notorious with his unbecoming behaviour whenever he visits bars and solicits for drinks through intimidation. I don't support hooliganism but this is a wake-up call for those with such characters. They must reform," a reveler who witnessed the incident said.

Attempts by security agents to save his colleague from more assault from the mob were thwarted when the attackers smoked him out of a police vehicle as he fought back in vain.

The businessman, Ngundi Mutunga told The Standard that the officer (name withheld) wanted to settle a dispute with him by implicating him in the assault.

"We have outstanding dispute where the police man stabbed my lady bar maid with a knife early this year and I pursued the matter until he paid the woman Sh10,000 to avoid arrest and prosecution. He has since kept accusing me of aiding the woman to get the compensation," Mutunga said.

Mr Mutunga said if anything the police man owes him and his wife for embarrassing them in public by touching her bosom during the discotheque.
