Residents celebratepost-election violence officer's retrial order

Kisumu residents have praised the Court of Appeal for ordering the retrial of an officer who shot dead a protester in Kisumu during the 2007-2008 post-election violence (PEV).

On the day Police Constable Edward Kirui - who walked away a free man after the High Court acquitted him of murdering a protester - was back in the dock to face charges relating to another victim, the residents also called on the Government to look deeper into unresolved extra judicial killings in the county.

Mr Kirui was on Monday charged with the killing of Ismael Chacha, a Tanzanian, on January 16, 2008 at Kondele Estate in Kisumu.

Kisumu City Residents Voice (KICIREVO) Chairman Audi Ogada expressed hope that justice that had been delayed would be achieved during the retrial.

"We condemn extra-judicial killing of suspects who have already surrendered to the police and hope justice will be achieved one day," said Ogada, claiming that exhibits that may help in investigations mysteriously go missing from police custody.
