Three MCAs arrested while receiving Sh280,000 bribe from contractor

Nairobi, Kenya: Three Members of County Assembly (MCAs) in Nairobi were Thursday arrested while receiving a bribe of Sh280,000 from a contractor.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) said the three had demanded Sh400,000 from the contractor to help him secure jobs at the County.

EACC spokesman Yassin Amaro said they were arrested at the Ankara Restaurant that is next to City Hall after they had received the Sh280,000 marked as a down payment.

"They will appear in court tomorrow to face charges of corruption and abuse of their offices," said Amaro.

He added that the businessman had complained to the commission of the demands from the MCAs before an undercover operation was organized.

Those arrested in the 3pm operation were identified as Njuguna Mwangi (Makadara), Samuel Irungu Mwangi (Komarock) and Moris Otieno (Nairobi West).

Witnesses said the MCAs tried to resist their arrrest in vain.

The MCAs were driven to the EACC offices at Integrity Centre where they were grilled for hours pending their release on bail ahead of their arraignment.
