Part of Sh78m stolen in transit by police recovered in Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya: Police have recovered Sh13 million of the more than Sh78 million that was stolen by KK Logistics crew and police while on transit in Nairobi.

The money was found left in a van that three officers and three guards were using before they vanished in Huruma area.

No arrest has been made so far. Police investigating the incident revealed that the management of the security group had claimed the money was Sh82 million at the time the van left Westlands.

Police are hunting down their colleagues who escaped with the money that they were escorting to the Central Bank of Kenya on Monday afternoon.

Three officers, who were escorting the cash, are missing but their guns, uniforms and a vehicle they were using was found abandoned in Huruma slums, Nairobi.

Also in their company were three KK Security guards who could also not be traced by Monday evening.

They were escorting the cash from Westlands to the Central Bank headquarters when they went missing.

Nairobi head of CID Nicholas Kamwende said they were called and informed there were guns, uniforms and vehicle  abandoned in the area at about 4pm.

“We suspect they left the money intentionally but we hope to get them. A team is on the ground,” said Kamwende.

A hunt was launched in Mathare slums later but no arrests were made. Police believe their colleagues and the guards had planned well on how they would escape with the cash.

“The fact that they had time to undress and abandon their guns means that they had planned well,” said Kamwende.

He added that they have obtained details of the officers and guards and their trail is ongoing.
