Yash Raj Kachela has never looked back since he was introduced to the game of golf by his loving father Raj Kachela seven months ago. His passion for the game has grown to such an extent that he literally trains with anything that can be used as a tee off in his location.

This dedication started paying off three months ago. He has since won a total of five titles as a marker player or player without handicap. Among the trophies he has locked safely in his cabinet are the AON Minet Western Division tournament in August, Vaisakhi Golf Day tournament sponsored by the Eldoret Golf Club this month, Eldoret Golf Club’s Monthly Mug for September, Kenya Commercial Bank Open in July and lastly the Eldoret Bearing and Spares tournament held last month.

“I think I have achieved a lot within a span of just seven months, this is a good show that great things await my career in golf,” the bubbling 14 year old said.

The forever smiling young lad believes hard work pays and that is why he has resorted to create time to practice golf during school and when on holidays at the Eldoret Golf Club where he and his parents have registered as members.

“During school days I practice thrice a week. I train on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 3-4pm. When we have closed school I train every day,” says Yash who is year nine student at Gulab Lochab Academy in Eldoret.

Yash plays competitive golf every weekend which he uses to gauge his development in the game.

“I use the weekend tournaments to apply every technique that I have learned during my weekday practices, some techniques are easy to master while others require time and a bit of effort,” he says.

Currently, Yash is learning how to change his swing which he believes has been limiting his potential to earn more points on the fairways.

“I realised I was stuck with my previous swing and the much points I could earn in the course was below 19 stablefords, but my newly adopted swing which I started using at the Standard County Golf Classic series has realised 30 points, I hope to make this swing better,” Yash noted.

Yash is forever grateful for his parents whom he says are always by his side during practices and tournaments.

“I thank my father who is also my role model. He has bought me all the golf kits I needed and inspires me daily to train hard and play well on the course. My mother is also by my side. She picks and drops me during practices and helps me with school work,” he says.

Yash is also using golf to build his team of network and to relax after a demanding syllabus at school. When he grows up, the young boy is eager to be a neurosurgeon or a cardiologist as he strongly believes he has a calling in medicine.

He is hopeful his game will step even further so as to get opportunity to play for Team Kenya at international events someday.
